JD(S) Former MP Prajwal Revanna has approached the Karnataka High Court in appeal for cancellation of his life imprisonment in a case of rape. On August 2, 2025, Revanna was convicted by a special court in Bengaluru for repeatedly raping his domestic worker between January 2021 and January 2022. The court also ordered a ₹5 lakh fine and paid ₹7 lakh as compensation to the victim
Legal Reasons for the Appeal
Revanna has argued various points in his petition to assail the trial court’s judgment:
Inconsistencies in Testimony: Revanna argues that there are inconsistencies between the survivor’s complaint and her testimony, calling into question the reliability and consistency of her testimony.
Alleged Coercion: He alleges coercion by the police on the survivor to file the complaint, imputing political motive to the charges.
Doubtful Evidence: The appeal questions the validity of evidence, including stains of bodily fluids several years after the incidents are said to have happened, with the contention that the evidence ought not to have been permitted.
Delay in Filing: Revanna raises the issue that the complaint was lodged three years after the incidents are said to have happened, questioning the timing and sincerity of the charges

The Karnataka High Court is yet to set a hearing for the appeal.
Political and Social Consequences
Prajwal Revanna, the son of senior JD(S) leader H.D. Revanna and grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, was a bright young star in Karnataka’s politics. His conviction has shaken the political circles in the state, leaving the state questioning accountability and the rule of law even for powerful public members.
The case has also initiated a wider debate over the handling of sexual assault victims, the admissibility of evidence, and the possible abuse of legal proceedings for political interests. Lawyers underscore the need for a fair trial and that the judiciary must critically examine the merit of the appeal, regardless of the individual’s political standing.
Outlook
While the legal battle rages on, the Karnataka High Court’s upcoming ruling will be keenly observed. The case is not just about the destiny of one person but is also an indicator of the state’s determination to adhere to justice and ensure that the law follows all equally, without consideration of political clout. The decision can be a precedent for dealing with comparable cases concerning public figures in the future.
Until then, the legal fraternity and the public are waiting for the High Court to hear the appeal, which would have far-reaching implications for the legal community as well as the political scenario in Karnataka.
