In a development that is very noteworthy, three doctors have been detained in relation to a counterfeit scheme of issuing duplicate Unique Disability ID (UDID) cards to medical candidates. The police from Malleswaram in Bengaluru made the arrests after an inquiry was launched by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).

The Scam Unfolds

The counterfeit process was about the abuse of the disability quota for MBBS admission. Candidates wishing to get seats under this special reservation category produced forged UDID cards, which claimed hearing disabilities. KEA found 21 such instances in the course of verification. During inquiries, it was found that the forged cards were distributed by Dr. Sudhakar, an eye specialist in Mangaluru Village Primary Health Centre in Koppal. He is said to have given the fake documents to the students.

Arrested Individuals

The doctors who have been arrested are:

Dr. Sudhakar: An ophthalmologist from the Mangaluru Village Primary Health Centre in Koppal.

Dr. Hariprasad: A medical officer at the Hosapete government hospital, Vijayanagara district.

Dr. Srinivas: A paediatrician at Kamalapur Government Hospital.

Also, Umesh Nagappa Chowdhury, who is a First Division Assistant (FDA) from Hosapete, was arrested for authenticating and issuing UDID cards without authority. He reportedly issued 20 UDID cards at different hospitals without the necessary authority.

Role of Other Accused

The prime mastermind of the racket, Bharamappa, an Nandini Layout-based teacher from Bengaluru, is charged with reaching out to aspirants and charging them ₹5,000 for every fraudulent UDID card. The cards were produced without medical examination, with numerous using hearing disability as a false pretext. The scandal was revealed by the KEA after they found around 21 bogus UDID cards during verification of MBBS applications. A case was registered on September 8 by the KEA, and the five arrested individuals are now in judicial custody. Others who were involved are still being searched for by the authorities, and the aspirants who had been benefited by the scam have yet to be taken action against.

Legal and Ethical Implications

The production of counterfeit UDID cards is a breach of medical ethics besides being a sabotage of the admission process integrity. The disability quota is meant to offer opportunities to students who have actual disabilities, and the fake activities deny worthy candidates such opportunities. That medical professionals are implicated in this racket seriously questions the ethical conduct within the healthcare system.

Ongoing Investigation

The Bengaluru police, assisted by the KEA, are pursuing their investigation into the scandal. They are looking into the scale of the scam and tracing all parties involved. The authorities have promised stern action against all the culprits in order to bring about justice and protect the dignity of the admission process.

This is a stark reminder of the weaknesses in the admission process and the imperative of taking strong measures to ensure that such fraudulent practices are not repeated in the future.
