Papa John’s Makes a Comeback in India with Bengaluru Launch

After an eight-year hiatus, American pizza giant Papa John’s is back in India—and this time, it’s here for the long run. The company marked its re-entry with the launch of four new outlets in Bengaluru today, kicking off an ambitious plan to open 650 restaurants across the country over the next decade.

The new innings is being led by PJP Investments Group, a UAE-based master franchisee, in partnership with Pulsar Capital, an investment firm. Together, they aim to tap into India’s rapidly growing food services market, with a carefully crafted, city-by-city strategy.

Small or Large? Papa John’s Is Going for Both

Unlike most fast-food chains that follow a fixed store format, Papa John’s plans to launch a mix of small and large-format outlets in India. This flexible model allows the brand to enter both premium urban centers and high-footfall neighborhood markets.

“We’re not rushing. Every city will be a focused investment. Bengaluru is first, followed by Chennai and Hyderabad,”
said Tapan Vaidya, Group CEO of PJP Investments, in an exclusive interview.

30 Stores in Bengaluru Over Two Years

The company’s first phase will focus on establishing a strong base in Bengaluru, widely regarded as India’s tech and startup capital. Papa John’s aims to open 30 outlets in the city over the next two years, creating a dense network for greater brand visibility and operational efficiency.

“We want to become a familiar and trusted name again. Quality, consistency, and a better pizza experience are at the core of this journey,”
Vaidya added.

India Strategy: One City at a Time

Rather than going national all at once, Papa John’s is taking a slow and steady approach. The leadership believes that hyper-local market understanding and strong operations are key to long-term success in a competitive market like India.

This strategy includes:

  • Entering one city at a time
  • Offering a mix of store formats to suit local demographics
  • Focusing on fresh, quality ingredients and a better baking experience
  • Building brand loyalty through consistent service and product quality

Who’s Behind Papa John’s India Push?

PJP Investments Group

  • Based in the UAE
  • Already operates Papa John’s stores in the Middle East
  • Known for strong retail operations and franchise management

Pulsar Capital

  • An investment firm with focus on retail and F&B expansion
  • Strategic partner in Papa John’s India growth plan

Together, the two are co-master franchisees for India and are investing in company-owned and operated stores—a move that allows for better control over product quality and customer experience.

Why Now? India’s Eating-Out Market Is Booming

Papa John’s return to India comes at a time when the country’s QSR (quick service restaurant) sector is witnessing explosive growth, thanks to:

  • Rising disposable income
  • Youth-driven food delivery culture
  • Urbanization and lifestyle changes
  • Demand for premium international food brands

India’s food services market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 11-12% in the next five years, making it one of the most attractive markets for global F&B brands.

What Sets Papa John’s Apart?

Papa John’s is betting big on its “Better Ingredients, Better Pizza” philosophy to differentiate itself from competitors like Domino’s, Pizza Hut, and newer cloud kitchen brands.

Key differentiators include:

  • Fresh dough made daily
  • 100% mozzarella cheese
  • No artificial flavors or colors
  • Global quality standards adapted to Indian tastes

A Long-Term Play: 650 Stores in 10 Years

The company has set an ambitious target of 650 stores in India over the next decade, which will all be company-owned. This approach reflects a serious long-term commitment to the Indian market.

Although Vaidya did not reveal exact investment figures, he emphasized that the rollout has been nearly two years in the planning, with an emphasis on scalability and sustainability.

What This Means for Consumers

For pizza lovers in India, especially in Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad, this means:

  • More choices in the premium pizza space
  • Consistent product quality with an international flavor
  • Modern, dine-in and delivery-friendly stores
  • Potential for exclusive regional offerings as the brand adapts to Indian palates

Papa John’s re-entry into India signals a fresh and focused strategy to tap into the country’s booming food services sector. With 30 stores planned in Bengaluru, followed by expansions in Chennai and Hyderabad, and a long-term goal of 650 outlets, the pizza chain is clearly in India for the long haul.

Whether it can slice into a market dominated by well-established rivals remains to be seen—but the ingredients for success are certainly coming together.
