In a breakthrough, Hebbagodi police arrested two individuals who stole over ₹1 crore in cash and jewellery from the residence of a Bengaluru-based businessman. The incident had taken place in Hulimangala village near Electronics City and had raised concerns of an organized theft attempt. The swift action of the police—coupled with CCTV analysis and investigation on the ground—resulted in the arrest within 48 hours.

Police officials said the businessman, identified as Ravi Kumar (name changed to maintain privacy), had gone out with his family to attend a relative’s function when the theft occurred. He returned home late at night to find the main door broken open and cash, along with a gold chain, missing from his bedroom locker. The value of stolen items was estimated at ₹1.3 crore.

Ravi promptly filed a police complaint at Hebbagodi Police Station. A senior police officer stated that initial suspicion fell on someone who knew the family’s movements based on the precision and timing of the break-in. “There were no signs of random ransacking. The accused knew exactly where the locker was and what to take,” the officer said.

The investigation team immediately started scanning CCTV footage from the neighbourhood. Footage from two streets away captured the image of two men acting suspiciously with a backpack around the time of the break-in. The images were grainy, but their build and clothing gave officers a direction in which to begin probing.

Based on leads, the police narrowed their investigation to two suspects in their late 20s, natives of Ramanagara district but currently working as daily-wage labourers in Bengaluru. Preliminary interrogation revealed that one of the accused had worked at a construction site near the businessman’s home earlier, thus giving him familiarity with the area.

A search by the police in the house where the suspects were staying yielded ₹92 lakh in cash, a gold chain believed to be that of the businessman’s, and several housebreaking tools. The remaining amount, according to the police, had already been spent or hidden elsewhere. Efforts are on to trace the remaining money.

Police sources said the robbery was meticulously planned by the accused. One of them had befriended a local security guard to observe the routine of the family. They struck the moment they got information that the family would be away for many hours. The duo allegedly used a metal cutter to force open the door and accessed the locker without raising any suspicion.

Investigators also believe this might not have been their first offence. The pattern matches at least two previous house-break cases reported in the region earlier this year. “We are checking their involvement in other unsolved burglary cases. Their method and timing bear similarities,” an officer said.

The arrests brought a sigh of relief among locals in the area. For the last three months, minor thefts were reported in several neighbourhoods around Electronics City, raising safety concerns. This case, being one of the high-value thefts in recent times, had drawn widespread attention.

The businessman, speaking to the media, thanked the police for their quick action. “It was a shocking experience for my family. We had never imagined something like this would happen in a relatively peaceful locality. The police have been extremely efficient in cracking the case,” he said.

The various IPC sections booked against the arrested persons include house-breaking, criminal trespass, and theft. The arrested persons were produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial custody while the investigation continues.

While the police officials called for improved home security, especially in rapidly developing areas like Electronics City with high footfall of new workers and transient labour, they asked property owners to install surveillance cameras and alarm systems and inform neighbours about their travelling schedules to avoid targeted thefts. As the probe expands, officers aim to retrieve the remaining amount and investigate if the two had accomplices or were part of a larger group. For the time being, swift arrests have returned a sense of security in the community and underlined the need for vigilance in urban neighbourhoods.
