Bengaluru Metro Blue Line to Kempegowda Airport Gets a Major Push

Bengaluru commuters finally have a reason to cheer as the long-awaited metro link to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) moves closer to reality. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced an ambitious rollout plan for the Namma Metro Blue Line, which promises to offer a faster and reliable alternative to the city’s traffic-clogged roads.

Timeline for the Blue Line

The Blue Line will span 58 km and is one of Bengaluru’s largest metro projects, with a projected cost of ₹15,000 crore. It combines elevated tracks, underground sections, and depot facilities. According to the latest reports:

  • Phase 1 (Central Silk Board to KR Puram): Expected to be operational by December 2026. This 19-km stretch will benefit commuters traveling between South-East Bengaluru and the Outer Ring Road (ORR) tech hubs.
  • Phase 2 (KR Puram to Hebbal): Scheduled for December 2027. This section will improve connectivity for Whitefield, Mahadevapura, and nearby areas heading toward northern Bengaluru.
  • Phase 3 (Hebbal to Kempegowda International Airport): The most anticipated stretch, offering air travellers a direct, hassle-free metro option to the airport, bypassing Ballari Road traffic.

Why the Blue Line Is a Game-Changer

The metro line is expected to transform daily commuting by reducing travel time, easing road congestion, and providing a dependable alternative for office-goers and travellers. The line will also integrate seamlessly with other Namma Metro corridors, enhancing connectivity across the city.

Parallel Infrastructure Updates

Shivakumar also addressed delays in the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project. To speed up land acquisition, compensation for affected landowners will now be directly deposited by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA). The state government has offered five flexible compensation options:

  1. Monetary payouts
  2. Transferable Development Rights
  3. Higher Floor Area Ratio
  4. Commercial plots
  5. Alternative land

Officials say this package is among the most flexible offered by any Indian state.

Looking Ahead

Once completed, the Blue Line will not only connect Bengaluru’s southern, eastern, and northern regions but also provide seamless access to the airport for millions of residents and visitors. With clear deadlines now in place, the project is expected to significantly ease travel woes and boost the city’s public transport network.
