The train services of Namma Metro in some areas of Bengaluru created a brief inconvenience to commuters on Tuesday morning because of a technical issue that disrupted them temporarily. The technical issue, which happened during peak hours, caused a brief delay on some routes, disrupting thousands of office-goers, students, and daily commuters getting to their destinations through metro services in Bengaluru.
Reports are that the issue arose as a result of some minor technical problem associated with signaling. By way of precaution, the trains were operated at lower speeds for a short while. This led to increased waiting times at some stations, where the platforms registered higher-than-normal crowd presence. This is especially the case at interchange and high-footfall points.
Delays experienced by passengers ran between five and fifteen minutes, depending on the route being traversed and the time of travel. Many passengers indicated that although the delay was tolerable, the fact that an instant answer was not forthcoming caused sufficient confusion. Some of the passengers indicated that congestion experienced during peak hour worsened the effect of the delay, such that a delay would immediately trigger a chain reaction of congestion on the coaches.
The metro officials reported that technical staff were dispatched immediately upon the identification of the problem. The technical staff were required to inspect the systems on the ground, following which the normal stream of services was reinstated. The officials reported that the safety systems functioned in the correct manner to prevent any disruption to the services.
Although the glitch was short-lived, this incident has once again proved the increasing reliance of Bengaluru on the metro services. With traffic congestion on roads steadily increasing in the city, the metro has proved to be the lifeline of the commuters of the city. Even a brief disruption in the services affects the office and school timing of the people.
A number of commuters took to social media platforms to express their experiences, with some calling on the authority to enhance communication channels in situations such as that. Passengers indicated that constant public address system and display Board communication would aid commuters in making proper decisions, such as route or traveling changes.
The metro officials responded to the comments, restating their commitment to enhancing communication for their passengers. The officials said announcements were conducted in stations and trains once they had been notified of the problem, and efforts were being made to increase visibility of warnings on platforms.
According to metro transport experts, as the number of metro passengers continues to grow, the need to ensure the reliability of the transport system becomes more important. It may not be a regular occurrence in any metro system around the world to experience technical breakdowns.
In recent months, steps have been taken by metro officials to ensure better efficiency in their services, such as improvements in monitoring facilities, training for staff, and safety checks. All such efforts have resulted in a drastic reduction in service disruptions for metro services, claim officials.
By mid-morning, normal train frequency had resumed. The level of crowding on the railway transport had reduced. The commuters who passed through later in the day experienced smooth operations. All the trains were moving according to schedule. Though the disruption on Tuesday was only for a short time and was handled with minimal complications, it did not go unnoticed as a reminder of what can potentially happen with the operation of a high-capacity transport network in a rapidly growing urban setting. As Bengaluru grows in size and the number of people using transport services intensifies, reliable metro services will remain one of the most significant concerns.
