Passenger traffic is seeing a sharp surge at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, with the city entering the year-end holiday season. “With New Year celebrations coinciding with school vacations and long weekends, airport authorities said there has been a sharp increase in both domestic and international travellers over the past few days.

Increase in Domestic and International Travel

According to the officials of the airport, leisure travel, family visits, and outbound holidays are the main reasons contributing to the increase in footfall. Domestic destinations like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Goa, Kochi, and Jaipur are operating almost full capacity flights. International routes to Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and London are also seeing very good demand.

Tour operators added, Bengaluru remains one of the busiest aviation hubs in India during the festive seasons because of its big working population and global connectivity.

Peak hours are the time when heavy crowding is witnessed.

Passenger traffic has been extra-heavy during the early morning and late-night hours, generally regarded as peak slots for departures and arrivals. It has also been reported that long queues were witnessed at the check-in counter, security screening, and boarding gates, especially in Terminal 1 during the peak travel windows.

The airport authorities have asked the passengers to reach the airport much before the scheduled departure time to avoid last-minute delays and congestion on weekends and holidays.

Improved Airport Operations and Staffing

The airport operator has deployed additional ground staff, customer service people, and security teams to cope with the load. More check-in and baggage drop counters have been opened, while coordination with airlines has been strengthened to ensure smoother passenger flows.

Moreover, the reinforcement of security checks with supplementary screening lanes during rush hours is meant to minimize waiting and preserve safety standards.

Technology and Passenger Assistance

Digital displays, self-check-in kiosks, and mobile app updates are being used aggressively to navigate passengers through the airport. Help desks and volunteer staff at the airport are guiding the elderly, passengers with families, and first-time travellers through the experience with ease.

According to airport officials, efforts are on to avoid congestion and ensure that a better turn-around time is achieved as many connecting flights are operated.

Traffic and Parking Advisory

Year-end rush takes off at Kempegowda International Airport as Bengaluru gears up for New Year travel.

The vehicular movement on access roads leading to the airport has also increased due to increase in passenger traffic, especially in the evenings. Travelers have been advised by authorities to leave their homes early and use buses or taxis whenever available to avoid delays associated with parking.

Parking facilities at the terminal have reached high occupancy, prompting officials to recommend that passengers make parking reservations online where possible.

Airlines Add Extra Flights

Several airlines have introduced additional flights and increased frequencies on high-demand routes to meet the seasonal surge. Travel industry representatives say that they expect the strong momentum to carry through until the first week of January, after which, in all probability, traffic would stabilise.

Outlook for the Next Couple of Days

The airport authorities, however, feel confident in managing the increased passenger traffic with much efficiency. Kempegowda International Airport is thus striving to ensure a seamless travel experience during this peak holiday season through ongoing coordination with airlines, security agencies, and ground operations teams. As Bengaluru enters the New Year, it is a reflection of the city’s pulsating mobility and an emerging role as a major gateway for travel and business.
