Travel through Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru is set to become smoother, faster, and far more convenient in the coming years. The airport operator, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), is preparing to introduce an automated people mover system that will make switching between terminals almost effortless for passengers.

This new development marks a major step forward in airport infrastructure in India and places Bengaluru alongside some of the world’s most advanced international airports.

A Big Upgrade for Bengaluru Airport Passengers

Kempegowda International Airport has seen rapid growth in passenger traffic over the past few years, especially after the opening of its second terminal. With more flights, more airlines, and longer walking distances, inter-terminal travel has become an important issue for passengers.

Currently, travellers rely on electric shuttle buses to move between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. While functional, these buses can involve waiting time, traffic delays on the airside, and inconvenience during peak hours.

The upcoming automated people mover, commonly known as an APM, aims to change that experience entirely.

What Is an Automated People Mover?

A Driverless Transit System

An automated people mover is a driverless, rail-based transport system designed to move people over short distances at high frequency. These systems are commonly used in large airports, theme parks, business districts, and university campuses.

APMs operate without human drivers and are controlled through advanced automation and signalling systems. They are designed to be safe, reliable, and capable of running every few minutes.

How It Works

Depending on the design, an APM may run on tracks similar to a metro system, a monorail, or even rubber tyres guided by a fixed pathway. The trains are compact, energy-efficient, and built specifically for frequent stops and quick boarding.

At airports, APMs usually operate within secure areas, allowing passengers to move between terminals without going through repeated security checks.

BIAL Invites Bids for Design Consultancy

BIAL has officially invited bids for design consultancy services for the APM project. Interested firms have time until Wednesday to submit their proposals.

The selected consultant will be responsible for planning the system layout, technology choice, station design, integration with existing terminals, and future scalability. This stage is crucial, as it will define how the APM fits into the airport’s long-term expansion plans.

While BIAL has not shared a detailed timeline yet, inviting design consultants signals that the project is moving from concept to execution.

A First-of-Its-Kind Project in India

Once operational, the APM at Kempegowda International Airport will be the first automated inter-terminal transit system at any airport in India.

Many global airports already use similar systems to handle high passenger volumes efficiently. Airports in the United States, China, Malaysia, and Singapore have long relied on APMs to move travellers quickly and comfortably between terminals.

By adopting this system, Bengaluru Airport is setting a new benchmark for airport infrastructure in the country.

Why the APM Matters for Passengers

Faster and More Predictable Transfers

One of the biggest advantages of an APM is speed. Unlike shuttle buses that depend on road movement and traffic coordination, APMs run on dedicated tracks. This means predictable travel times and fewer delays.

Passengers with tight connections will benefit the most, especially those transferring between domestic and international flights.

Less Walking, Less Stress

Kempegowda International Airport is spread over a large area, and walking long distances with luggage can be tiring, particularly for elderly passengers, families with children, or those with mobility challenges.

An APM reduces the physical effort required to move between terminals and improves overall comfort.

High Frequency and Reliability

APMs are designed to operate at short intervals, often every two to five minutes. This high frequency ensures minimal waiting time and smooth passenger flow, even during peak travel hours.

Because the system is automated, it also reduces the risk of human error and improves reliability.

From Shuttle Buses to Smart Mobility

At present, electric shuttle buses serve as the link between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. While they are environmentally friendly, they are still limited by capacity, scheduling, and road movement within the airport premises.

The APM represents a shift toward smarter, more sustainable airport mobility. It aligns with global trends where airports are investing in automation to handle growing passenger numbers efficiently.

As Bengaluru Airport continues to expand, such systems become essential rather than optional.

Part of a Larger Vision for the Airport

The APM is not a standalone project. It fits into BIAL’s broader vision of transforming Kempegowda International Airport into a world-class aviation hub.

With rising international traffic, new airline partnerships, and increased cargo operations, the airport is preparing for long-term growth. Efficient inter-terminal connectivity is a key part of that plan.

By planning the APM early, BIAL is ensuring that future expansions do not compromise passenger convenience.

Ultra-Luxury Hotel Also on the Cards

Feasibility Study Announced

In a parallel development, BIAL’s subsidiary, Bangalore Airport Hotel Limited, has issued a request for proposal to appoint consultants for a feasibility study for an ultra-luxury hotel at the airport.

The proposed hotel would cater to high-end travellers, airline crew, business executives, and transit passengers looking for premium accommodation close to the terminals.

Strengthening Airport City Concept

An ultra-luxury hotel would further strengthen the airport’s role as more than just a transit point. Modern airports are increasingly becoming destinations in themselves, offering hospitality, shopping, business facilities, and leisure options.

While details about the hotel’s size, brand, or features have not been disclosed yet, the feasibility study will assess demand, location, investment requirements, and long-term viability.

No Timeline Yet

When asked about timelines for both the APM and the hotel project, BIAL stated that it does not comment on projects that are currently in the tendering stage.

This suggests that while the ideas are moving forward, concrete timelines will only be shared after consultants are appointed and studies are completed.

What This Means for Bengaluru’s Future Travelers

The introduction of an automated people mover and the potential addition of an ultra-luxury hotel signal a clear direction for Kempegowda International Airport.

Passengers can expect smoother transfers, less stress, and a more global airport experience in the years ahead. For Bengaluru, a city known for technology and innovation, these upgrades align well with its image as a modern, forward-looking metropolis.

As passenger numbers continue to rise, investments like these ensure that the airport remains efficient, competitive, and comfortable for both domestic and international travellers.
