D K Shivakumar wants the Bengaluru Development Authority to change completely. He says there are a lot of problems within the Bengaluru Development Authority. D K Shivakumar talked about this during a meeting in Bengaluru. As the Deputy Chief Minister he said the Bengaluru Development Authority has problems people do not trust it and it is not managed well. All these problems have hurt the Bengaluru Development Authoritys reputation badly. So the Bengaluru Development Authority really needs to be fixed. It needs to happen now. D K Shivakumar thinks this is very important, for the Bengaluru Development Authority.
Shivakumar, who is also in charge of Bengaluru Development said that the information they have and what people are saying shows that there are problems with the BDA. The Bengaluru Development Authority has problems like projects taking long to finish not being open about how land is given out and not working well with other groups that take care of the city. Shivakumar said that the way people see the BDA now does not match what a big and growing city like Bengaluru should be. Bengaluru is still having trouble, with its infrastructure even though there have been plans to fix it. The Bengaluru Development Authority needs to do because Bengaluru is a city that is growing very fast.
Shivakumar spoke to officials and said that just making small changes will not work. He told the officers that they need to think about what they have done and take responsibility for making people trust the BDA again. People think the BDA is a problem, not a help. This is what people think because of what has happened over the years. We have to admit that there are problems, inside the BDA if we want to change this. Shivakumar said that officers who are honest should not be afraid of changes.. Officers who are not doing their job properly or who are corrupt will face serious consequences. The BDA needs to change so that people can trust the BDA again.
The Deputy Chief Minister also said that the people who plan the city need to work better. This includes the BDA, BBMP, traffic police and the people who take care of utilities like water and electricity. He said that when these groups do not work together it causes a lot of problems. The city does not get planned well the traffic gets very bad and the roads keep getting dug up. This makes the people who live in Bengaluru very frustrated. It costs a lot of money. The Deputy Chief Minister thinks that the people in charge of planning Bengaluru need to change the way they think. They need to stop thinking about the land and start thinking about the people who live here. They need to make sure that Bengaluru is a place to live that it is easy to get around and that it is good for the environment. The Deputy Chief Minister wants Bengaluru to be a city that is planned with the people, in mind not the land.
Shivakumar said that technology is very important for the BDA to work properly. He wants the BDA to use computers to keep track of everything so people can see what is going on and get approvals quickly. He also wants the BDA to watch projects closely as they happen so things do not get delayed.
The officials have to look at what other big cities, around the world’re doing and see if they can use those ideas to help Bengaluru deal with its own problems like a lot of people moving there and the environment getting worse. Shivakumar thinks that technology can help the BDA make Bengaluru a better place to live.
The state government is facing a lot of pressure to make Bengalurus infrastructure better. This includes fixing the roads, housing layouts and stormwater management. People who care about the city have been saying that the BDA does not really understand what is going on. Now Shivakumar is saying things that show he is willing to listen to these complaints and do something about them. The BDA and Bengalurus infrastructure need to be improved. It seems like Shivakumar is ready to take on this task.
Concluding his address, Shivakumar said rebuilding the BDA’s image would take time but must begin immediately. He urged officials to remember that public institutions exist to serve citizens, not themselves. “If we do not correct the system now, future generations will pay the price,” he warned. His comments have sparked renewed public debate on urban governance reforms and raised expectations that concrete changes may finally follow long-standing complaints about Bengaluru’s planning authority.
