Rail passengers in Karnataka have received a major boost as the South Western Railway (SWR) announced that the trial run of the Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat Express will commence on August 11, bringing the long-awaited semi-high-speed rail service a step closer to commercial operations. The trial marks a significant milestone in improving connectivity between Karnataka’s capital and the coastal city of Mangaluru, a route that serves thousands of commuters, tourists, students, and business travelers every day.

The trial will be conducted on the Sakleshpur–Subrahmanya Road ghat section, one of the most technically challenging railway stretches in southern India. Passing through the Western Ghats, this section features steep gradients, sharp curves, dense forests, and numerous tunnels and bridges. Railway officials consider the trials crucial for evaluating the train’s performance, braking efficiency, and operational safety before introducing regular passenger services.

One of the key reasons for the delay in launching the Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat service was the requirement for a train equipped with an Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system. Conventional trains operating on the ghat section often require additional banker locomotives to negotiate the steep slopes safely. To address this challenge, the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, supplied a specially equipped 20-coach Vande Bharat rake, which is currently stationed at Pandavapura railway station in Mandya district for testing and preparations.

The Mysuru Division of South Western Railway will oversee the trial operations, which are expected to continue for several days. Engineers and railway safety experts will closely monitor the train’s braking response, speed control, traction performance, and handling across the difficult terrain. Data collected during the trials will help determine whether the train is ready for commercial service and whether any technical modifications are required before launch.

The proposed Vande Bharat service is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Mangaluru while offering passengers modern amenities such as comfortable seating, onboard infotainment, improved safety features, automatic doors, GPS-based passenger information systems, and enhanced ride quality. The service is also expected to benefit business travelers, IT professionals, students, and tourists visiting Karnataka’s coastal districts and popular destinations in the Western Ghats.

The announcement comes shortly after rail connectivity on the Bengaluru–Mangaluru route was disrupted by landslips in the ghat section during the monsoon, leading to cancellations and diversions of several trains. Railway officials believe that completing the Vande Bharat trials successfully will represent an important step toward strengthening transportation infrastructure despite the operational challenges posed by the region’s rugged terrain.

Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna had earlier indicated that the Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat service would be introduced after the necessary safety requirements were met. With the arrival of the specially equipped rake and the scheduled trial beginning on August 11, the project has now entered its final testing phase before commercial approval.

If the trials are completed successfully, Karnataka will gain another important Vande Bharat corridor, further expanding India’s growing network of semi-high-speed trains. The new service is expected to enhance tourism, improve regional connectivity, and provide faster, safer, and more comfortable rail travel between Bengaluru and the coastal belt, reinforcing Indian Railways’ broader modernization efforts.
