BENGALURU, September 5, 2026: Bengaluru is taking centre stage in the international chess calendar as the fourth season of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League (GCL) officially begins today. The nine-day tournament will run from September 5 to 13 at The Lalit Ashok, bringing six franchise teams and some of the world’s leading chess players to the city.
The Bengaluru edition marks the first time the Global Chess League has been hosted in the city. After previous seasons in Dubai, London and Mumbai, the tournament’s arrival in Bengaluru highlights India’s growing importance in the global chess ecosystem. Organisers are also looking to build on the strong response to last year’s Mumbai edition and introduce the franchise format to a new audience.
Six Teams, One Million Dollars at Stake
Six franchises will compete for a share of a $1 million prize pool during the tournament. The participating teams are Alpine APL Pipers, Triveni Continental Kings, Fyers American Gambits, Ganges Grandmasters, PBG Alaskan Knights and CheQ Mumba Masters.
The league uses a distinctive team-based format combining elite male players, leading female players and young prodigies. Each franchise fields six players, creating opportunities for different generations of chess talent to compete together.
The preliminary stage follows a double round-robin format, with the teams facing each other twice from September 5 to 12. The top two teams then advance to the final on September 13, where they will compete in a best-of-two championship showdown.
Magnus Carlsen Returns
One of the biggest attractions of Season 4 is the return of Magnus Carlsen, who is competing for Alpine APL Pipers. The world No. 1 is joined by an impressive lineup featuring Anish Giri, Vidit Gujrathi, Koneru Humpy, Divya Deshmukh and Volodar Murzin.
Carlsen’s presence adds considerable attention to the Bengaluru tournament, particularly because he will face Javokhir Sindarov, the 2026 World Cup winner and icon player of Fyers American Gambits. Their encounters are among the most anticipated matchups of the league.
Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand is another major attraction. Anand, who played for Ganges Grandmasters during the league’s first three seasons, has moved to the PBG Alaskan Knights for the fourth edition. He will compete alongside Indian star Arjun Erigaisi and emerging talent Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus.
Bengaluru Becomes a Chess Hub
The tournament is also significant for Bengaluru’s sporting profile. The city already has a strong chess community, and hosting an international franchise league provides an opportunity to connect established grandmasters with India’s rapidly growing base of young chess enthusiasts.
Season 4 also features the GCL debut of Divya Deshmukh, the reigning FIDE Women’s World Cup champion, adding another important storyline to the competition.
With elite players, mixed-gender teams, rapid time controls and a franchise-based structure, the Global Chess League aims to present chess in a more dynamic, spectator-friendly format. As the first moves are made in Bengaluru today, the city is set for nine days of high-level competition, intense rivalries and global chess action.
