A Bengaluru-based engineer has reportedly lost nearly ₹1.95 crore after falling victim to an online trading scam that began with a social media advertisement promoting an artificial intelligence-based investment opportunity. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the growing threat of digital financial frauds targeting professionals through fake trading platforms and misleading investment promises.

According to the police complaint, the 47-year-old engineer came across an advertisement on Facebook in February 2026 that promoted a platform linked to “Quantum AI” trading. After clicking the advertisement, he was redirected to a website where individuals claiming to be representatives of a trading company contacted him and encouraged him to invest.

The victim reportedly transferred a total amount of ₹19,468,235 between February 27 and September 9, believing that he was participating in legitimate online trading activities.

Fake Trading Platform Creates False Investment Confidence

Investigators stated that the victim was introduced to a person who presented himself as an account manager and guided him through trading activities on the platform. The fraudsters reportedly created the appearance of a professional investment environment by showing trading data, account balances, and potential returns.

The platform allegedly displayed profits and encouraged the engineer to invest larger amounts over time. Like many online investment scams, the operation reportedly relied on building trust before requesting bigger financial commitments.

The victim initially believed his investments were growing and continued transferring money based on the instructions provided by the alleged representatives.

However, concerns emerged when he attempted to withdraw his funds from the platform.

Withdrawal Problems Reveal Possible Fraud

According to the complaint, when the engineer tried to withdraw his money, he faced repeated delays and was allegedly asked to continue trading or deposit additional amounts.

The individuals managing the platform reportedly gave various explanations, including claims that additional payments were required due to banking procedures, taxes, or other formalities before releasing the funds.

The engineer allegedly received requests for further payments, including demands involving amounts of ₹50 lakh and ₹20 lakh, after which he approached the police.

The incident was reported to the East CEN police station in Bengaluru, and authorities registered a case involving charges related to cheating, identity misuse, and impersonation.

Rising Threat of Digital Investment Scams

Cybercrime officials have repeatedly warned people about fraudulent investment schemes promoted through social media platforms. Scammers often use attractive advertisements, fake experts, and professional-looking websites to convince victims that they are accessing genuine financial opportunities.

Technology professionals, business owners, and high-income individuals are increasingly being targeted because fraudsters assume they may have greater investment capacity.

Experts advise investors to verify whether trading platforms are registered with appropriate financial regulators, avoid guaranteed return promises, and never transfer money based only on online conversations.

Police Investigation Underway

Authorities are investigating the movement of funds, the identities of individuals operating the platform, and possible links to larger cybercrime networks. Investigators suspect that the money may have been transferred through multiple accounts or digital channels as part of an organised fraud operation.

The case highlights the importance of digital awareness as online financial scams continue to evolve with the use of advanced technology, artificial intelligence branding, and social engineering techniques.

As Bengaluru remains one of India’s largest technology hubs, cyber safety has become a critical concern for professionals and businesses operating in the digital economy.
