BENGALURU – British semiconductor company Graphcore, a subsidiary of the SoftBank Group, has announced plans to invest £1 billion in India, with a major engineering campus set to be established in Bengaluru. The investment marks a significant milestone in the city’s emergence as a hub for artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductor research.

Graphcore, known globally for designing advanced AI processors and accelerators, revealed that the Bengaluru campus will focus on research and development of cutting-edge AI hardware and software solutions. The company aims to leverage India’s rich talent pool of engineers, data scientists, and AI specialists to drive innovation in the AI chip industry.

“We are thrilled to expand our presence in India,” said Graphcore CEO Jeremy Smith. “Bengaluru has a vibrant technology ecosystem, world-class engineering talent, and a strong innovation culture. Our new campus will accelerate Graphcore’s mission to advance AI hardware while creating numerous high-quality job opportunities in the city.”

Bengaluru: India’s AI and Semiconductor Hub

The investment aligns with India’s broader goals of strengthening its semiconductor and AI capabilities. The Indian government has been actively promoting semiconductor manufacturing and AI research through initiatives such as the India Semiconductor Mission and the National AI Strategy. Bengaluru, already home to several global tech giants and AI startups, provides an ideal environment for Graphcore to scale its operations.

The new campus, expected to be operational by late 2026, will host research labs, engineering teams, and AI design centers. Graphcore plans to collaborate with local universities and research institutions to develop talent pipelines and foster innovation in AI hardware, including chips for machine learning, natural language processing, and computer vision applications.

“India’s semiconductor ecosystem is evolving rapidly, and Bengaluru stands at the center of this transformation,” said Rohit Prasad, an AI expert based in the city. “Graphcore’s investment is a vote of confidence in Indian engineering talent and reflects the potential for India to become a global leader in AI chip development.”

Job Creation and Economic Impact

Graphcore’s £1 billion investment is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs over the next few years. Engineers, software developers, AI researchers, and operational staff will be recruited locally, boosting Bengaluru’s tech employment sector. The investment also promises to strengthen the city’s AI research ecosystem by supporting startups, universities, and incubators through partnerships and collaborative projects.

Analysts note that such investments can also attract ancillary industries, including semiconductor fabrication, component suppliers, and software development firms, further solidifying Bengaluru’s status as India’s Silicon Valley.

Industry Implications

Graphcore is a leading player in the AI hardware space, competing with global semiconductor giants such as NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel. The Bengaluru campus will enable Graphcore to tap into emerging markets and accelerate the development of AI solutions for enterprises, cloud providers, and research institutions.

“The AI hardware sector is highly competitive, and Graphcore’s move demonstrates India’s growing relevance in the global technology landscape,” said Ananya Ramesh, a technology analyst. “Such investments signal that India is not just a market for software outsourcing but also a destination for advanced semiconductor research and innovation.”

Graphcore’s £1 billion investment in Bengaluru represents a landmark development in India’s AI and semiconductor journey. By combining world-class engineering talent with global expertise in AI chip design, the company aims to push the boundaries of technology while contributing to the local economy.

As Bengaluru continues to attract major tech investments, the city is poised to strengthen its position as a global hub for AI innovation and semiconductor research, supporting India’s ambitions to become a leader in next-generation technology.
